The tracks for the Django Unchained Soundtrack have been a closely guarded secret. However, we have some clues based on the movie trailer. In fitting with the country theme of the movie, the dominant song on the trailer was Johnny Cash’s “Ain’t No Grave (Gonna Hold This Body Down)”. It wouldn’t be the first time Tarantino has used a Cash song for one of soundtracks. He used ‘A Satisfied Mind’ on the Kill Bill: Volume 2 Soundtrack, the 10th track.

Other rumors for the Django Unchained Soundtrack include My Way, by Frank Sinatra and Payback by James Brown. Judging by the plot of the film, in which a freed slave seeks revenge, both songs sound perfect.

Django Unchained will be the latest film by Quentin Tarantino, and his first Western. It stars Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio , Kerry Washington and Christoph Waltz.

Set in the 1850’s, plantation slave Django must assist a bounty hunter in his quest to try in order to buy his freedom then rescue his wife, Broomhilda. While officially this movie is a Western, Tarantino refers to it as a Southern, to its setting in the Southern states of America. Jamie Foxx stars as Django, with his wife Broomhilda being played by Kerry Washington. Christoph Waltz is the bounty hunter, Dr. King Schultz and Leonardo DiCaprio is the plantation owner, Calvin Candie.

Samuel L. Jackson also appears as a character named Stephen. It will be the fifth time Samuel L. Jackson has appeared in a Tarantino movie.

Both Kill Bill Vol. 1 Original Soundtrack and Kill Bill Vol. 2 Original Soundtrack are worth of entry into the pantheon of Quentin Tarantino movie soundtracks. They inspire the fun, suspenseful and action-heavy vibe of the films. Preview the two soundtrack albums here:

Kill Bill Vol. 1 Original Soundtrack was produced by RZA from the Wu-Tang Clan. The album reached number 45 on the Billboard 200 album chart as well as hitting number one movie soundtracks chart. It features a mixture of music inspired by both Western and Eastern martial arts movies. There are 22 tracks on the album, but the last three are action sound effects from the movie.

Kill Bill: Volume 2 Original Soundtrack was produced by frequent Tarantino collaborator and friend Robert Rodriguez. RZA from the Wu-Tang Clan returned from producing the first Kill Bill soundtrack to assist on the second. Robert Rodriguez reportedly produced the soundtrack for one dollar, with Tarantino directing a scene from Rodriguez’s Sin City for the same fee. The two would also collaborate on the Grind House movies, with Rodriguez directing Machete and Tarantino directing Death Proof.

The soundtrack to Volume Two it peaked at number 58 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and on the movie soundtracks Billboard chart it reached number two.

The Samuel L Jackson Pulp Fiction Bible quote is one of the most popular and timeless pieces of dialogue from a movie that is overflowing with verbal gems. It not only stands strong amongst its illustrious famous pulp fiction counterparts, it also stands strong amongst cinemas best quotes. It came fourth in a poll for the best speech in movie history, voted on by 6500 movie fans. It was only beaten by Robert Duvall’s “I love the smell of napalm in the morning” from Apocalypse Now, Jack Nicholson’s “You can’t handle the truth” in A Few Good Men and Marlon Brando’s “I could have been a contender” from On The Waterfront.

The Ezekiel 25:17 Scene

Jules Winnfield and Vincent Vega, wearing identical suits, go into an apartment to collect a briefcase for their boss Marsellus Wallace from Brett and his crew. After interrogating Brett, and shooting one of his friends, Jules recites his famous biblical passage, Ezekiel 25:17. They then execute Brett. One of Brett’s crew bursts out of another room and unloads a handgun at Jules and Vincent, but miraculously misses every shot. After killing the shooter, Jules and Vincent leave with Marvin, their informant from inside Brett’s crew.

Quentin Tarantino movies are well known for the soundtracks, and he has a reputation for obsessing over how music fits in and adds to his movies. Now, whenever listeners hear those songs they heavily associate them with their particular scene in the movie. Released in 1997, The Ultimate Tarantino Connection is a compilation of the best music from the Tarantino movies released up unill then. There are tracks from Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, From Dusk till Dawn, True Romance and Natural Born Killers. As well as this, there are a couple of interviews with Tarantino, where he gives insight into the importance of movie soundtracks and how he selects the music to go into his films. Unlike his dedicated movie soundtrack cds, like the Pulp Fiction Soundtrack, the Reservoir Dogs Soundtrack and the Jackie Brown Soundtrack, the Ultimate Tarantino Connection does not contain any of the dialogue from the movies. However, it does contain a great collection of movies, and is a great reflection of the key tracks from those movies.

If you are going to select one album as your Tarantino Film soundtrack fix, then you can’t go wrong with The Ultimate Tarantino Connection. However, it suffers from its early release. There are Tarantino Movies, then there are Tarantino Movies, and this compilation doesn’t necessarily reflect that. For most people, Tarantino films are the ones he both writes and directs, such as Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, the Kill Bills, etc. The Tarantino Connection takes songs from quintessential Tarantino movies Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs. However, it also takes music from From Dusk till Dawn, True Romance and Natural Born Killers, none of which Quentin Tarantino directed but either wrote or adapted for the screen. They’re all great movies, but you won’t get the same connections from the songs in them like you will with ‘Stuck in the Middle with You’ or Miserlou. So if you are going to just get one album, then go for this one, but as a Tarantino soundtrack fan, I would much rather go for the movie’s specific soundtrack.

Quentin Tarantino loves to make homage films. The Kill Bills were his tribute to spaghetti westerns and martial arts. The Jackie Brown movie is Tarantino’s homage to 1960’s blaxploitation films. Even Quentin Tarantino’s earliest films had phenomenal casts, but Jackie Brown steps it up even more, especially for someone’s third film. It rejuvenated the career of Pam Grier who played the title character. She is supported by an ensemble cast including Michael Keaton, Robert Forster, Samuel L. Jackson, Robert De Niro, and Bridget Fonda. For his role as role as bondsman Max Cherry, Robert Forster was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Pam Grier and Samuel L. Jackson were both nominated for Golden Globes.

Jackie Brown has some truly memorable scenes, particularly the scenes featuring with Robert De Niro, Samuel L. Jackson and Bridget Fonda and the Jackie Brown soundtrack is possibly Tarantino’s best. It’s a good movie, but probably lacks the Tarantino identity that was so evident in Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction. Its production values, a result of Tarantino’s increasing budget are far in excess of his earlier movies.

Machete Review

Continuing from Quentin Tarantino’s and Robert Rodriguez’s 2007’s Grindhouse, Machete (2010) is the feature-length movie promised in the fake trailer. In Grindhouse Tarantino directed Death Proof and Rodriguez directed Planet Terror. Machete is co-directed by Robert Rodriguez and Ethan Maniquis and written by Robert Rodriguez and Álvaro Rodriguez. While Machete continues the bloodily comical spirit of Planet Terror, it is more of a standalone movie in its own right, with a surprisingly complex, if ridiculous, plot.

It stars movie veteran Danny Trejo, finally getting a starring role of his own. The supporting cast features actors more accustomed to starring in their own films such as Robert DeNiro, Steven Segal and Jessica Alba as well as familiar faces Don Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez and Lindsay Lohan.

If ever a movie delivered on what is says on the box, Machete does it. It’s cartoonishly violent and bloody, contains nudity, one liners and an outrageous plot. If that appeals, then you’ll love Machete. It’s a fun B movie and probably delivers even more of a homage exploitation grindhouse films than Tarantino’s and Rodriguez’s original double feature.

If you liked Planet Terror then Machete is a must watch. Also, if you enjoy action B-movies, particularly starring Steven Segal and other action icons from the eighties, then you’ll find Machete a lot of fun. Grab the Machete DVD, Blu-Ray or download Machete so you can watch it with friends. It’s the perfect movie to laugh and talk through without missing out on plot points.

Machete was released on Blu-Ray and DVD on January 4, 2011. This edition contains the widescreen theatrical version as well as special features including an audience reaction track and deleted scenes. The deleted scenes are a lot of fun but it’s a little disappointing that the original fake Machete trailer from Grindhouse is not on the DVD or Blu-Ray.

The side-by-side mash-up of Sydney Tamiia Poitier’s lap dance in Death Proof and Uma Thurman’s pre-drug overdose dance in Pulp Fiction is one of the highlights. However, maybe I could have done without the Robert Forster and Pam Grier kiss tribute. It’s played about three or four times in a row.

Tarantino staples like foot fetishes, drug use, graphic violence and trunk openings all get due homage. As well as those, the clip contains foul language and is spoiler-heavy, so be warned. However, it’s definitely worth checking out. The video is 7 minutes and 16 seconds long.

While Inglourious Basterds is a rank outsider for the big awards, Tarantino’s nominations in both Best Picture and Best Director show he is very much in contention. It is also possible the two leading candidates, Avatar and The Hurt Locker could cancel out each other’s votes, giving Inglourious Basterds the chance to swoop in.

Earning US$14.3 million in the United States on its opening Friday and an opening weekend gross of US$38 million, Inglourious Basterds has earned a worldwide gross US$320.3 million. This makes Inglourious Basterds Quentin Tarantino’s highest grossing film.
Inglourious Basterds also marked a return to critical acclaim for Tarantino and featured in the top 10 of many critics’ lists for 2009.

Death Proof was released in 2007 as part of a double feature with the Robert Rodriguez film Planet Terror under the collective title Grindhouse. The double feature was to pay homage to the exploitation films of the 70’s that were quite often presented in double feature format at the time.

Whilst the films were given mostly positive reviews, Grindhouse performed poorly with the US Box Office and as a result, the movies were released individually to the rest of the world. At the time of writing this there is only one commercially available DVD release of Grindhouse in its entirety and that was in Japan. The rest of the world got individual releases such as Death Proof: Extended and Unrated. A 2 disk DVD set containing additional footage for the film and a number of extras.

As a film, Death Proof contains many familiar elements found in other Tarantino films: the intense but sometimes random dialogue and the brief moments of graphic violence. Although missing this time around is the stylish soundtrack that is synonymous with Tarantino films. Whilst not regarded as his best work, it is still a great watch and the Death Proof: Extended and Unrated version is still a must for any Tarantino film collector.
